The Sümi Kukami Hoho has urged the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) to reschedule the Combined Staff Recruitment Examination (CSRE) scheduled for November 14, 2026, as it coincides with Ahuna, the traditional harvest festival of the Sümi community.
In a representation addressed to the NSSB chairman on October 12, the Hoho expressed concern that holding the state-level recruitment examination on the festival day could place candidates in a difficult position, forcing them to choose between a career opportunity and participation in an important cultural observance.
The Hoho stated that Ahuna holds deep cultural, historical and social significance for the Sümi community and is an integral part of its identity and heritage. It also pointed out that the festival is recognised in the annual cultural calendar of the Government of Nagaland, with its observance associated with November 14.
While acknowledging the importance of a fair and transparent recruitment process, the Hoho clarified that its representation was not intended to seek preferential treatment or obstruct the examination. Instead, it appealed for fair consideration and cultural sensitivity to ensure equal opportunities for candidates from all communities.
The Hoho requested the Board to choose a suitable alternative date for the examination and urged it to consider major traditional festivals and significant community observances while preparing examination schedules in the future.
“As representatives of the village chieftains and custodians of the traditional institutions and cultural heritage of the Sümi community, we believe that the aspirations of our youth and the preservation of our cultural identity must go hand in hand,” the representation stated.
The Hoho expressed hope that the Board would give its appeal due consideration and take appropriate action in the interest of the youth, the Sümi community and the people of Nagaland.
