The Doyang Wildlife Division has reiterated the ban on hunting and trading wild animals and birds under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, warning that violators will face legal action.

In an order dated October 13, the Office of the Wildlife Warden, Doyang Wildlife Division, under the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, stated that hunting wild animals and birds within Nagaland is strictly prohibited, except as permitted under the Act.

The order specifically highlighted the protection of Amur Falcons, warning that hunting, trapping, killing or selling the migratory birds for food, possession or other purposes constitutes a criminal offence. Violators may face imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine of Rs 25,000, or both, under Sections 9 and 51 of the Act.

The directive applies to areas under the Doyang Wildlife Division covering Wokha, Mokokchung and Zunheboto districts. It directs all concerned to comply with the prohibition and cautions that individuals or groups found violating the provisions will face prosecution.

Wildlife Warden Jongponglemba stated that appropriate legal action would be initiated against violators.

The division has called for public cooperation in protecting wildlife, particularly migratory species such as the Amur Falcon, and conserving Nagaland’s biodiversity.
