The All Sümi Students’ Union (SKK) staged a silent democratic protest outside the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Friday, reiterating their demand for the upgradation of Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu (KPA) into a full-fledged government engineering college.
Protesters gathered at the NLA gate until 6:30 PM, chanting “We Want Engineering College, Upgrade KPA” as elected members exited following the 6th Session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, which will conclude on March 8.
This protest marked the second consecutive day of demonstration by SKK, which had previously protested on Thursday, expressing frustration over the state government’s failure to implement a 2007 State Cabinet resolution that called for the establishment of a degree-level engineering college in Nagaland. Despite repeated appeals, the government has yet to provide a written assurance to address their demands.
SKK has vowed to continue its indefinite democratic protest until the government formally commits to upgrading KPA.
The Central Nagaland Students’ Association (CNSA) has expressed full solidarity with SKK, calling the issue state-wide in significance. CNSA commended SKK’s unwavering commitment to securing the long-overdue upgradation of KPA.
CNSA also highlighted the importance of the issue, stating that the lack of a government engineering college in Nagaland forces countless students to seek technical education outside the state, which places significant financial and emotional burdens on families. The students’ body urged immediate government intervention to resolve the issue.
“Upgrading KPA is not just a regional concern but a state-wide matter,” CNSA stated. “We support SKK’s efforts to engage with the government through repeated representations and ultimatums. Their call for a written assurance is justified, emphasizing the need for tangible action instead of empty promises.”
CNSA reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitor the situation and extend full support to SKK’s ongoing protest.
Imchen Presses for KPA Upgradation
Meanwhile, Advisor for IPR and Soil & Water Conservation, Imkong L Imchen, raised the issue during the Zero Hour of the 6th Session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on March 7. Imchen reminded the House of the Cabinet Resolution passed on December 17, 2007, for the upgradation of KPA. He emphasized the need for urgent attention from the concerned department and the fulfillment of all necessary formalities to make the upgradation a reality.
