Mokokchung, September 24 (MTNews): Under the technical supervision of the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, the Sungkomen Ward Council today implemented the first ‘Rainwater Recharge Pit’ in Mokokchung.

‘Rainwater Recharge Pit’ construction in Sungkomen ward

Prior to its construction, the ward council held a seminar earlier today in the Sungkomen ward Community Hall to raise awareness about rainwater conservation through the ‘Rainwater Recharge Pit.’

The seminar, according to Limanungsang, Chairman of Sungkomen Ward, was held to help people understand the mechanism and benefits of the recharge pit, as well as to raise awareness about rainwater conservation through it. He also expressed his desire for people to understand more about pros and cons of ring wells and borewells.

“On September 3, a similar seminar was given at MMC conference hall, and chairmen along with secretaries from all wards participated. We were inspired by what we learned at the seminar and are putting it into practice here,” he remarked.

According to the chairman, the recharge pit recommended by the Department of Soil and Water Conservation is a minimum of 5 cubic feet and 5 feet depth which he believes the recharge pit constructed today was of the recommended specifications.

The resource persons from the Department of Soil and Water Conservation explained how the pit will contribute in recharging the ground water and will aid in reducing the ‘scarcity of water’ issues.

The representatives from the Department of Soil and Water Conservation also encouraged all persons as well as other wards to make such pits, adding that the method of making the pit and the materials needed are inexpensive. The department also stated that they are always willing to lend technical help.
