Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir has urged the Union government to address the concerns of contractual employees working under Prasar Bharati at Doordarshan, Nagaland, including their job security, pay structure and basic service benefits.
In a letter dated August 11 to Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, Jamir raised concerns regarding contractual employees serving in the Engineering and Programme Sections of Doordarshan, Nagaland.
According to the MP, the employees were engaged through public advertisements and interviews and are entrusted with responsibilities similar to those performed by regular staff. Their duties include technical maintenance, studio operations, transmission and programme execution, which he said are essential to the daily functioning of the broadcaster.
Jamir stated that despite carrying out these responsibilities, the contractual employees continue to work without adequate job security, a structured pay system and basic service benefits.
He urged the Centre to consider a policy for their regularisation or absorption, taking into account their experience and length of service. He also sought implementation of a proper pay structure based on the principle of equal pay for equal work.
The MP further sought job security and basic service benefits, including Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), medical facilities and leave provisions for the contractual employees.
In a separate but related request, Jamir called for special recruitment to both the Engineering and Programme Sections of Doordarshan in Nagaland, stressing the need to strengthen manpower in the state.
Jamir expressed hope that the Union Ministry would consider the issues urgently and take appropriate steps in the interest of the employees and the effective functioning of Doordarshan under Prasar Bharati in Nagaland.
