India secured a seven-wicket victory over the United States at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, on Wednesday. This win guaranteed India a spot in the Super Eight, as they now have 6 points with one game remaining in Group A. As a result, Pakistan’s chances of advancing to the next stage hinge on the outcome of the USA vs. Ireland game on June 14. If the USA loses, Pakistan can qualify for the Super Eight by defeating Ireland and accumulating four points. However, if the USA wins, they will advance with 6 points, eliminating Pakistan, who can only reach a maximum of four points.

In Wednesday’s match, Arshdeep Singh’s impressive figures of 4 for 9, the best by an Indian bowler in the T20 World Cup, helped restrict the USA to 110 for 8. Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten fifty then guided India to victory in 18.2 overs.

The USA put up a strong fight in this tense T20 World Cup 2024 match. Having previously beaten Canada and former champions Pakistan, the USA pressured India from the start. On a challenging pitch, the USA scored 110/8 in 20 overs and then reduced India to 39/3, dismissing key players Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant. Despite this, unbeaten batters Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube steered India to the target in 18.2 overs, though it was not an easy task.

India also benefited from an unexpected penalty against the USA. The hosts were docked five runs due to a new rule penalizing teams for exceeding 60 seconds to start a new over three times in an innings.

SA, Aus secure Super 8 spots as washout hurts Sri Lanka’s chances

Earlier, the Group D match between Sri Lanka and Nepal was called off due to inclement weather in Florida, resulting in both teams sharing a point. This washout has significantly reduced Sri Lanka’s chances of progressing, leaving them with just one point from three games and on the brink of elimination. Two losses in two games meant Sri Lanka needed to win their remaining matches and rely on other results. Their final group game is against the Netherlands on June 16, where they must win by a large margin and hope for favorable outcomes in other matches.

The washout ensured South Africa, leading the group with two wins, advanced to the Super 8s.

Meanwhile, Australia secured their spot by defeating Namibia, thanks to Adam Zampa’s 4 for 12, which restricted Namibia to 72 runs. Australia chased the target in 5.4 overs, resulting in Namibia’s elimination.
