Bagging a total of 17,054 votes, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio trounced the younger Congress candidate Seyievilie Sachu by 15,824 votes and retained his 11-Northern Angami-II AC for the fifth time.
The 72-year-old stalwart is on course to be the Chief Minister of Nagaland for a record fifth term together with its ally BJP who secured 12 wins in this assembly election.
CM Rio has once again proved to be the political leader who does not have a worthy opponent in the state of Nagaland.
Rio not only retained his seat, but his party, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), fielded the most candidates – 40 – and won 25 seats, up from 18 it won in 2018.
Rio also introduced two female candidates on his party’s ticket this time, Hekani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse, who has created history by becoming Nagaland’s first women elected to the legislative assembly.
Rio also provided room for new and youthful candidates such as Temjenmenba and Imkongmar, both of whom achieved comfortable margins of victory.
Following the ticket allocation, there was much outrage directed at Rio by erstwhile NPF legislators who had shifted allegiance to the NDPP with hopes of receiving the NDPP ticket to contest the elections. Rio, on the other hand, replaced most of them with fresh faces and witnessed successful performance throughout districts and constituencies, making the NDPP the single largest party in the newly elected state assembly.
The Nagaland election 2023 also put the BJP in an awkward position if they were to break their pre-poll alliance, and the numbers suggest that they will have to remain content as the ‘minor partner’ between the two.
All said and done, it appears CM Rio has returned to his seat for the fifth time as the sole invincible victor of the Nagaland state assembly election 2023.
