Tiapong Tzudir, also known as the Yatra Kid on his social media handles, is a student at Mumbai University. He is a student leader and an executive member of the Naga Students’ Union Mumbai. On Monday, he released footage of some miscreants abusing him racially outside the Mumbai University Kalina campus.

Tzudir alleged that the people who harassed him called him names like “chinki, Chinese” while hiding their faces in the video.

He shared a video of the entire incident on Instagram, which received a large number of responses.

Tzudir related that some young people, numbering 5-7, began calling him names and threw water at him as he was leaving the campus for dinner following Sunday Service. The water missed and fell on his hands.

Following the incident, Tzudir and a few of his university friends from the North East put up posters near the location of the harassment, which, according to him, the locals later took down.

He said that it was an “effort to educate the public about the North-East” and that he wanted to handle the situation sensibly to avoid turning it into a legal dispute.

The harassers, according to him, were identified from the video he had recorded with the assistance of community leaders, and a meeting with their parents was scheduled for later that night. But, the perpetrators didn’t show up, he said.

Afterwards, Tzudir filed an FIR at the advice of the local authorities.

A non-cognizable offence was reported under IPC sections 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation), according to DCP (zone VIII) Dikshit Gedam.
According to Tzudir, the police have detained a number of them and are actively conducting an investigation.

“The police really did a good job. It was something I did not expect. I thought that the police might not be with me but they took my matter very seriously,” he stated.

Tzudir asserts that he does not view this issue as his own personal battle but is viewing the problem in a bigger context adding that a lot of North Eastern people have been victims of racism.

He said that many people have been reaching out to him with words of consolation and concern.

“The response from the people, especially via social media, has really helped me and has given me more strength to stand up for this,” he said.

“I am really appreciative of them. But I also don’t want people to think of me as a victim; rather, I want them to think of me as someone that stood up to racism together with a crowd,” he said.

He expressed his feelings on how his fight had been “an act of courage and bravery.”

“I am extremely grateful in a way that this had happened to me, but I hope that such unfortunate incidents never happen to anyone in the future,” he said.

“While I was a victim, I understood that this had given me the chance to stop being the victim and instead become someone who could genuinely stand up,” he added.
