Mokokchung unit of the Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI) marked International Nurses Day by organizing a special program under the international theme “Our Nurses, Our Future” at the Multipurpose Hall, School of Nursing, IMDH on 12 May.

The celebration was graced by Dr Kibangkumba, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Mokokchung as chief guest. In his speech, the CMO emphasized the critical role of nurses in ensuring the well-being of patients stating that nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system.

Stating that nurses are the “second God in this world” and that nursing is a noble profession, he asked if the nurses are humble and noble enough for the job. He also mentioned numerous National Health Programs and stated that nurses are the ones to implement them. He further encouraged the nurses to opt for posts in Community Health Centers, Sub-Centers and Primary Health Centers as most of the health programs are implemented in the “outposts.”

Dr Kibangkumba further asserted that with multiple programs in the country and the advancement of science, communicable diseases are mostly contained but the non-communicable diseases are on the rise, which he said is of “our own making.”

“In the earlier days there were hardly any cases of diabetes or hypertension, but today, every 5th or 6th person in the hospital is either diabetic, suffering from hypertension or suffering from some sort of cancer,” he said.
“Unlike the earlier days when people used to play outside or do some sort of farming, the people have become too lazy today which results in the rise of diseases,” he added.

He further asserted that “until and unless some changes are made, it’ll be very difficult for our next generation to survive in this world.” In this regard, he urged the health care professionals to educate the public of the dos and don’ts.

Other highlights of the program included Lipoksangla, Nursing Tutor sharing the significance of the theme while Monglier, Associate Pastor, MTBA prayed for the nurses. Akokba, X-ray Technician performed a rendition of the song ‘Imagine’; 2nd Year GNM students performed a play; Apokla and Aosangla MTS performed a comedy; and T Temsusenla Aier VP, SON chaired the program.
