Japanese company Toshiba celebrates the career and contributions of Lanu Toy, a retired Chief Electrical Engineer who played a vital role in the development of northeastern India’s electrical power sector

Mokokchung, 31 October (MTNews): Toshiba, the renowned Japanese multinational conglomerate, recently paid tribute to Lanu Toy, a distinguished figure from Nagaland who played a significant role in India’s electrical power sector. In a heartwarming reunion, Toy, now in his twilight years, visited Japan on October 11, 2023. During his visit, he met Yotsuyanagi, the leader of Toshiba’s Energy Systems and Solutions (ESS) division.

 

During their meeting, Yotsuyanagi (ESS) paid tribute to Toy’s substantial contributions thus far and conveyed Toshiba’s eagerness to continue benefiting India through its technological prowess.

He affirmed Toshiba’s significant role in supplying 24 sets of hydropower turbines and 34 generators in India since 1965, a testament to Toshiba’s impact on India’s hydropower generation sector.

Reflecting on his transformative experience in Japan, Toy emphasized how his six-month training program at Toshiba in 1961, focused on the intricacies of the Toshiba 9MW turbine power generation unit, laid the foundation for his technological achievements. Toy also emphasized how the knowledge and expertise he gained, coupled with an invaluable understanding of Japanese work ethic and culture, formed the bedrock of his technological achievements.

Born in 1927, Lanu Toy’s illustrious career as an electrical engineer is widely celebrated in Nagaland. His tenure culminated in his retirement from government service as the Chief Electrical Engineer, a position of great influence and responsibility. A pivotal chapter in his career was his instrumental role in the Umiam Stage-I Hydroelectric Power Project at Barapani, Meghalaya. His endeavors have played a pivotal role in bringing prosperity to northeastern India.

In 1961, Toy first journeyed to Japan, embarking on a transformative six-month training program at Toshiba. This program focused on the intricacies of the Toshiba 9MW turbine power generation unit, a cornerstone of the Umiam Stage-I Hydroelectric Power Project.
