Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unwavering commitment to the holistic development of Northeastern states. The endorsement came during the virtual inauguration and dedication ceremony of 85 healthcare projects across the region, held at Changsari in Kamrup, near Guwahati on Friday.
Dr Mandaviya lauded the transformative impact of Prime Minister Modi’s multifaceted focus on healthcare, employment, education, and connectivity in the Northeast. Historically plagued by insufficient facilities, according to Dr Mandaviya, the region saw significant migration to other parts of India. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, this trend has been reversed, ushering in a phase of rapid development.
The ceremony witnessed the inauguration and foundation stone laying of various Healthcare Infrastructure Projects, benefitting Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. Notably, foundation stones for crucial healthcare projects in Dimapur and Mon districts were also launched during this occasion.
Nagaland’s healthcare boost
Nagaland received a substantial boost in healthcare development, with the foundation stone for vital healthcare projects in Dimapur and Mon districts being virtually launched at the Dimapur District Hospital. Nagaland’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Paiwang Konyak, expressed gratitude as the health department received the third installment for the National Health Mission program after nearly five years.

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also virtually inaugurated the permanent campus of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Guwahati. Additionally, the foundation stones of NIPER Hyderabad and NIPER Raebareli were also laid. The Minister highlighted NIPER’s role in creating a self-reliant India in the pharmaceutical and MedTech sector, connecting knowledge, education, research, and business.
NIPER Guwahati, spread across 60 acres of land with a total project cost of Rs 157 crore, stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to a progressive Northeast, said Dr Mandaviya.
Significant investments and future prospects
According to Dr Mandaviya, the government’s proactive approach has resulted in an allocation of funds totaling Rs 404.22 crore for the dedication, foundation stone laying, and inauguration of health infrastructure units across the Northeast region. Notable investments include Rs 127.34 crore for the dedication of five essential buildings in RIPANS, Aizawl, and Rs 150 crore earmarked for the dedication of the Super Specialty Block at Assam Medical College.
Dr Mandaviya applauded Assam’s efforts in establishing a grid of Cancer Treatment Centres, collaborating with Tata Memorial Institute and 14 other cancer institutes, bringing significant benefits to the entire North East.
Minister of State Bhagwanth Khuba emphasized NIPER’s contribution to creating a skilled workforce, fostering growth and development in the sector. The Union Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s dominance in the pharmaceutical sector and reduce dependence on imported APIs and medical devices. Initiatives include the creation of three bulk drug parks in the country and the launch of the PLI scheme in the pharma and MedTech sector.
