Teisovinuo Pienyu and Vimenuo Lhoungu from Nagaland have received the 2024 Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. They arrived in Taiwan last month after a relatively smooth visa application process, filled with a mix of pre-departure excitement and anxiety.

Their first impressions upon landing in Taiwan confirmed the renowned hospitality of the Taiwanese people. Pienyu recounted an experience at the bank: “One moment that really impressed me was at the bank. We needed some assistance, and the staff guided us with great care and attention. What stood out the most was that instead of us thanking them, they thanked us instead. This experience made me appreciate the phrase ‘Xie Xie’ (Thank You) even more. This exceptional friendliness and courtesy truly highlighted how remarkable the people here are.”

Beyond the warmth of the local people, Pienyu was captivated by the landscape, advanced technology, and the discipline of the people: “The island was absolutely mesmerizing, far surpassing anything I had imagined. The natural beauty, the technology, the rules, the overall discipline—everything was just amazing. From the vibrant cityscapes and stunning architectural structures to impressive environmental conservation, it felt as though everything was viewed through a beauty-filtered camera.”

Regarding their Mandarin classes at the university, both students are impressed by the modern, technologically advanced classroom setting, well-equipped and helpful teachers, and diverse cultural activities. Lhoungu noted, “The fact that people from all over the world come to Taiwan to learn Mandarin is really encouraging and incredibly inspiring. I feel great to be a part of this diverse learning environment.”

During their first days in Taiwan, Pienyu and Lhoungu realized the value of their Mandarin classes at the Taiwan Education Center of Assam Don Bosco University. Pienyu remarked, “Ms. Kuei-Mi Li’s Mandarin classes have been incredibly helpful in almost every aspect of our lives here. Most of the population speaks Mandarin, so the lessons have proven valuable in countless situations, from dealing with formalities at the immigration office to everyday tasks like grocery shopping. Every single vocabulary word we learned in class has turned out to be useful, far beyond what I ever expected.”

Lhoungu shared a similar sentiment: “My ability to comprehend and speak basic Mandarin has made it easier to interact with the local people and engage comfortably in class activities. The skills I acquired in my ADBU Mandarin lessons have undoubtedly helped me in my life in Taiwan. I’m very grateful to my teacher, Li Kuei-Mi, who prepared us so well for this experience.”

The two students strongly recommend learning Mandarin and seizing opportunities to study in Taiwan. Pienyu said, “I’m absolutely certain that learning Mandarin and studying in Taiwan is an experience you’ll never regret. Immersing yourself in the world of Mandarin will allow you to fully appreciate Taiwan’s vibrant culture and stunning beauty. The language skills you gain will open doors to exciting career opportunities. It’s a remarkable adventure that offers both cultural and professional growth.”

Lhoungu echoed this advice: “I would also recommend studying in Taiwan to experience firsthand learning and real-life conversations with local people. Attending local festivals, visiting historical landmarks, and experiencing Taiwanese art and traditions will foster a deeper appreciation for Taiwan’s diverse heritage.”

The latest batch of Mandarin classes at ADBU’s Taiwan Education Center is now open for registration. The class is available to all Northeasterners at an affordable fee. For more information, please contact +91 9365096013.
