Former Nagaland legislator Nungsangyapang Aier passed away on Thursday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 74. A funeral memorial service was held at his residence in Aongza Ward, Mokokchung, before his mortal remains were taken to his native village Mopungchuket for the final resting. He is survived by his son.


Born on October 24, 1950, Aier was the son of Late Supreptsuba and Late Ladonglila. He completed his schooling in Mokokchung, graduated from Shillong College in 1982, and joined the Government of Nagaland in 1983 as an Inspector in the Department of Weights and Measures.

A sports enthusiast and active student leader, Aier represented Nagaland and the Northeast in several national football tournaments and held leadership positions in multiple youth and student organisations. Resigning from government service to enter politics, he contested the Nagaland Legislative Assembly elections four times from the 23 Impur Assembly Constituency, winning twice in 2003 and 2008.

Over his decades of public and community service, Aier held key roles in political parties, student unions, and social organizations.

The Ex-Parliamentarians Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Nüngsangyapang Aier on August 8 in Mokokchung. A member of Ex-PAN since 2013, late Nüngsangyapang served as a Nagaland Legislative Assembly representative from 2003 to 2013.

The statement noted, “His passing is a great loss to the Ex-PAN family.” It added, “Having represented his people… late Nüngsangyapang discharged his responsibilities by working tirelessly for the welfare and uplift of the people of the 23rd Impur Assembly Constituency, the Aos and the Nagas.”

The association extended “deepest and heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family” and wished, “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
