United Nyenching Club defeated Irenic FC 2-1 in the final to win the inaugural Longleng District Football League, which concluded on August 22.
Organised by the Longleng District Football Association, the league provided a platform for young footballers to showcase their talent and prepare for higher-level competitions. MLA and Advisor for Airways & Railways A. Pongshi Phom congratulated the finalists and encouraged the LDFA to continue organising such events.
Phom expressed hope that the tournament would help emerging players earn opportunities to compete in the 25th Dr T. Ao Inter-District Football Championship 2026. He also urged young footballers to maintain discipline, fairness and commitment while staying away from drugs, substance abuse and anti-social activities.
Highlighting developments in Nagaland football, Phom said Nagaland United Sports Club had reached an agreement to acquire Aizawl Football Club’s Indian Football League (IFL) licence. Subject to approval from the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Nagaland United is expected to play its home matches in Dimapur, potentially marking Nagaland’s entry into the IFL.
Phom said Longleng’s young players had the potential to make the district a “Footballer District” in Nagaland.
I Phongyei Phom of Irenic FC won the Best Player and Golden Boot awards, while Y. Baüang Phom was named Best Goalkeeper. P. Bushing Phom of Laimeishem Club won Best Coach and Chingyang Y Phom of Ya-Ouh FC was adjudged Emerging Player.
