Chozuba, 9 February (MTNews): Top Naga wrestler Venuzo Dawhuo secured victory at the 29th Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA) Wrestling Meet held in Chozuba Town on Friday.
Dawhuo’s triumph marked his fourth consecutive title, as he dominated Vemele Thingo in straight bouts, solidifying his status as a wrestling stalwart.
Hailing from Thenyizu village, the 27-year-old athlete stands tall at 5 ft 11 inches and weighs 105 kg. Dawhuo’s remarkable achievements include being the defending Nagaland wrestling champion for both 2022 and 2020. Additionally, he holds the prestigious title of three-time Open Naga Wrestling champion, claiming victory in 2015, 2021, and 2023.
Rukukhoto Khesoh secured the third position, and Huluyi D Vadeo claimed the fourth position. The championship was organized by the Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA) and hosted by the Chozuba Range Wrestling Association (CRWA), with the management overseen by the Chozuba Town Baptist Church (CTBC).
The champion, Venuzo Dawhuo, received a cash prize of Rs 250,000, along with the Lt. Chosanyi Rose Memorial Running Championship Belt, and Rs 20,000 and a citation. The second, third, and fourth position holders were awarded Rs 170,000, Rs 130,000, and Rs 100,000 respectively, along with citations.
Patton encourages inclusive Naga wrestling training across Nagaland
Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton graced 29th Chakhesang Wrestling and 3rd Under-16 Championship, while Kudecho Khamo, Advisor for CAWD & Taxes, was the guest of honour.
Patton urged the Angami and Chakhesang wrestling associations to extend their training efforts to other communities in Nagaland, enabling broader participation and hosting of wrestling tournaments.
He emphasized that wrestling fosters unity alongside healthy competition. Patton expressed delight and honor at being invited and expressed his eagerness to witness the wrestling matches.
As the Deputy Chief Minister holding the Home portfolio, he also assured to upgrade the Police Outpost in Chozuba from Officer Incharge (OC) to SDPO, as requested by MLA Kudecho Khamo, and pledged to inaugurate it personally.
Advisor for Civil Administration Works Division & Taxes, Kudecho Khamo, was the Guest of Honour at the event. Khamo expressed gratitude to the Almighty God for providing an opportunity for people to gather for His glory. He extended heartfelt thanks to the guests, well-wishers, and players. The Advisor highlighted Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s commitment to promoting sports for the youth’s sustainability and encouraged the public to initiate family projects for employment orientation and a better life.
Pudusa Chizho, the first Chakhesang Wrestling champion (1968), unfurled the tournament flag, followed by the lighting of the wrestling torch by the defending champion and the administration of the oath to the wrestlers.
The championship torch was lit by the first CWA Champion Pudusa Chizo, reigning champion Venuzo Dawhuo, and U-16 reigning champion Thuputha Hesuh as the torchbearers.
Sports enthusiasts, wrestling lovers, and well-wishers from different districts of the state witnessed the one-day wrestling meet.
