The 17th Imchaba Master Memorial Nagaland Open Volleyball Trophy 2024 is set to be held from September 17 to 20 at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, Mokokchung, organized by the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA).
A total of 19 teams from across Nagaland have registered for the tournament, which will be divided into four groups. The tournament will be played in a league-cum-knockout format.
The MDVA has announced cash prizes of Rs 1,00,000, Rs 70,000, Rs 30,000, and Rs 20,000 for the champion, first runner-up, second runner-up, and third runner-up, respectively. Individual prizes of Rs 5,000 each will also be awarded for Best Spiker, Best Setter, and Player of the Tournament.
A unique feature of this tournament is that all participating teams, except for the final four, will receive a participation grant of Rs 5,000 each. Additionally, the MDVA will provide travel allowances to teams from outside Mokokchung District.
Over the years, the tournament has grown to become one of the leading volleyball events in Nagaland in terms of participation, spectator turnout, prize money, and brand image. This year, seven of the participating teams are from outside Mokokchung, including two each from Tuensang and Kohima, and one each from Dimapur, Wokha, and Zunheboto. Interestingly, 11 of the teams are from various villages across Mokokchung District.
Incidentally, the defending champions Ozumi Volleyball Team is a composite team featuring some of the best players in Nagaland. In a thrilling showdown at the 16th Imchaba Master Memorial Nagaland Open Volleyball Trophy 2023 championship match, Ozumi Volleyball Team emerged victorious against the then-defending champions MH10 in a nail-biting five-set thriller.
Coincidentally, the Changtongya Volleyball Association and MH10 Kohima, arguably the two strongest volleyball teams in Nagaland at the moment, are in the same group (Pool D). This means there is a high likelihood of these two rivals reaching the championship match, similar to what happened in the recent Lukesasong Memorial tournament.
Meanwhile, the once-feared Longsa Sporting Club will be looking to regain its lost glory. Itovi Memorial Club and United Changki are potential winners, although none of the teams at this level can be written off.
All in all, the tournament promises to be another showstopper.
The volleyball fervor is set to keep its grip on Mokokchung as the 17th Imchaba Master Memorial Trophy will be followed by another major event – the 5th Padmashree W Nokdenlemba Open Volleyball Tournament from October 9 to 11, 2024.
