Herd mentality is the tendency to follow the opinions and actions of a group without independently examining their merit. It is visible in politics, consumer behaviour, social media and public life, where popularity is often mistaken for correctness and conformity takes precedence over critical thought.

The tendency is particularly strong pronounced in societies where individual identity is closely tied to family, clan, tribe or community, where the pressure to conform can be suffocating. In societies where social relationships are deeply interconnected, disagreement may carry a personal cost, risking isolation, strained relationships or accusations of disloyalty. Limited exposure to diverse viewpoints and a culture that discourages questioning authority can reinforce this behaviour. These factors can make independent thinking more difficult.

Herd mentality becomes especially damaging in tribal societies when collective identity is used to discourage dissent. A political leader may enjoy support not because of performance or integrity, but because of community affiliation. An argument may be accepted because it comes from a respected elder or influential organisation, while contrary evidence is dismissed as an attack on the group. In such circumstances, loyalty becomes more important than competence, accountability and truth.

The consequences are far reaching. When every issue is viewed through the narrow lens of group interest, communities risk overlooking corruption, resisting necessary reforms and perpetuating practices simply because they are “customary.” Those who question prevailing beliefs may be “excommunicated,” depriving society of diverse ideas and perspectives essential for progress.

Tribal solidarity itself is not the problem. Shared identity, customary institutions and collective responsibility can be sources of strength. The danger arises when solidarity demands unquestioning obedience. A society advances when its members can disagree without being branded disloyal, scrutinise leaders without fear and judge ideas on their merits rather than their origins.

Progress requires the confidence to distinguish between traditions worth preserving and practices that need reconsideration. A community that discourages dissent may preserve outward unity, but actual progress depends on its willingness to question, reflect and change.
