Nagaland Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, S Supongmeren Jamir, announced today during a press conference at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office in Mokokchung that he intends to address the issue of Frontier Nagaland Territory demand of the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) in the ongoing budget session.
Responding to questions about why he missed the critical ENPO issue during his initial budget speech in the Parliament, the MP explained, “Since it was a budget session, my speech focused more on budget matters. However, since I am returning tomorrow and we still have another week left (Budget Session), I will try to speak and highlight the ENPO issue there.”
When asked about the sudden interest in the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Nagaland after 10 years, the MP clarified, “Arun Jaitley mentioned the IISER Nagaland in the 2015 budget. However, inquiries revealed that while the foundation was laid, the current status of the land remains uncertain. We are unsure if the state government is aware of the land earmarked for IISER. Once the central government commits and assures the people, it must be established.”

Jamir emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for committed projects and reviewing centrally sponsored schemes. “As the lone MP, it is our duty to ensure that pending development projects are delivered to the people,” he stated. “The state government has prioritized these projects, and we must see them through.”
Regarding whether the IISER land allocated in Chümoukedima, as claimed by the Governor, is the same project he mentioned, the MP expressed uncertainty. “I am not aware if they are the same, but it seems unlikely,” he added.
Addressing the reduced budget allocations for the MGNREGA scheme, Jamir highlighted the scheme’s significance for rural daily wages. “Reducing funds for this scheme deprives rural people. The Government of India claims some states request only 50-60 days of work, but this is incorrect. Who would not want 100 days of wages?” he questioned.
MGNREGA is one of the largest work guarantee programs in the world launched in 2005 by the Ministry of Rural Development. The primary objective of the scheme is to guarantee 100 days of employment in every financial year to adult members of any rural household willing to do public work-related unskilled manual work.
When asked how accountability should be proceeded for the poor implementation of MGNREGA in Nagaland, Jamir called on beneficiaries, VDBs, VDB secretaries, and village councils to come forward and take social justice seriously and avail of the sanctions and incentives provided by the state government. “I was told that Zapami village in Phek District is doing really well (MGNREGA),” he noted.
