Nagaland joined the global community in observing World Soil Day on December 5, 2024, under the theme “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage.” The day was marked with various events across the state, emphasizing the importance of soil health, sustainable farming practices, and the vital role of soil conservation in ensuring food security and combating climate change.

In Kohima, the Central Water Commission (CWC) Member AS Goel flagged off a van with the World Soil Day message at Hotel Jafü. He was joined by Director of Soil & Water Conservation L Chubaonen and other officials. During the program, Goel underscored the importance of soil in sustaining life on Earth and called for collective efforts to protect and nurture this vital resource. The program also included a reading of the World Soil Day Pledge, highlighting the need for sustainable soil management to improve soil health, reduce erosion, and contribute to carbon sequestration. Since 2019, the department has issued 1,67,904 Soil Health Cards to farmers, and pamphlets were distributed at key locations including the Hornbill Festival and various junctions in Kohima.

In Wokha, the District Soil Conservation Office hosted its World Soil Day event at Molunsu Community Hall. Pelebei U Kense, JSCO, delivered a presentation on sustainable farming and soil conservation, encouraging farmers to adopt practices that promote long-term soil health and productivity. A pledge was led by Chumbeni Odyuo, DSCO, and soil health cards were distributed to farmers. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from C. Chumbemo Kikon, SCA, and was attended by 40 farmers and officials.

Tuensang also celebrated World Soil Day at the ECS Conference Hall, with a program organized by the Soil and Water Conservation Department in collaboration with the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). Dr. Alika N. Zhimo, DSCO & PD ATMA, urged farmers to utilize the training sessions on Soil Health Cards and sustainable soil management. The event included demonstrations on micro-nutrient application and soil health management, as well as a quiz and essay competition aimed at raising awareness among students and farmers. The program was chaired by Dr. Toshimenla, DPDB ATMA, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Wetosangla, ATM of Noksen Block.
