Yemjong Chang, currently a resident of Tuensang town, started doing magic just because he liked watching magicians perform on television.

Amazed and fascinated by those shows he watched, he first learned his magic trick in 2015. Once he got to know more about magic, an idea popped into his mind to make himself and his art available in social media.

He started it first on Instagram and then started his YouTube channel and upon realizing that there were no other Nagas that he knew of in this field, he decided to become a ‘Naga magician’.

And ever since, he has been performing his magic frequently in social media even though he believes that 99% doesn’t know that a Magician in Nagaland exists.

Coming across his act, Mokokchung Times took this opportunity to know more about him.

MTimes: What was the first magic trick you learned?
Yemjong: The first magic trick I learnt was making a card vanish from my palm.

MTimes: When did you perform your first magic show?
Yemjong: So far no official invite but I did some live Magic in some places.

MTimes: How long have you been performing magic? I believe you’re one of the first in Nagaland?
Yemjong: I started doing it in the year 2015. Yes, I believe I am the first Magician from Nagaland.

MTimes: What is your favorite magic act and why?
Yemjong: Sleight of hand magic is amongst the best magic I ever learned.

MTimes: Have you ever broken unsaid magician’s rules? Why keeping a secret is paramount in the art of magic?
Yemjong: Magic is an art and those who pursue this field must respect it. So far I haven’t broken any secret codes but there are many tutorials out there which affect our career. Magic is boring once you know the secret. But these days many want to get famous or to get lots of views so they end up revealing every secret.

MTimes: Do you create your own new magic acts?
Yemjong: Improvising is the main key in this art. We lack in every aspects. It’s hard to get even a good quality deck of cards in Nagaland.

MTimes: What is your purpose in following and performing the art of magic?
Yemjong: I did it because I wanted to create something different among the community. So, why not become a Naga magician.

MTimes: How challenging is it to make a career in magic?
Yemjong: There are lots of constraints because it’s new to our community. Instead of supporting, I also get lots of criticism. It’s hard to please everyone and I cannot do that.

MTimes: What is your advice for those who wish to become magicians?
Yemjong: Those who are interested in this art, my advice would be just to have ‘patience’ because it takes a lot of patience to learn a single magic trick.

MTimes: What are your future plans with the art of magic?
Yemjong : Well, it’s hard to comment about it now since I am still nowhere successful myself. But I believe something new can be introduced in our community; not only magic but other arts as well where everyone’s talent will be appreciated by all.
