Young Women Christian Association Mokokchung (YWCA), located above Metsüben Hotel, Mokokchung Compound runs under the theme, ‘Creating a Safe Space’ and is empowering women through their various initiatives and programs.
The Association’s motto “By Love, Serve One Another” works on the principle, ‘Women against the Violence’ where they identify violence first, then takes time to feel the pulse of the environment and later create a safe space for those who are victimized.
YWCA Mokokchung is affiliated with YWCA India. YWCA is a nonprofit human rights-based international organization that provides support and opportunities for women and girls to connect, mobilize, and inspire each other to take action for women’s rights and gender equality.
YWCA Mokokchung started as a prayer fellowship with around forty women in 1998 with P. Arenla Ao as the President and Apokla Ben as the Secretary.
Observing that many children miss out on their pre-school education due to financial limitations, the association set up a Montessori school in 2000 at a much affordable price where even economically weaker sections can become a part of the school. It was also the first pre-school in Mokokchung with nineteen students in its initial year.
The present president of the YWCA, Mokokchung, Mrs. Temjensangla is of the view that the school is “not really a formal structure but more like a playschool”.
“Despite the structures and the system of the school being different from regular academic institutions, the children still learn and catch up with the children of regular academic institutions” she said.
“As a Christian association, we practically live out the words in our lives. By love we serve one another, serving without giving into our sinful & selfish nature. I challenge all the readers to come together with a willing heart to serve one another and create safe spaces around us.” Temjensangla
In May 2017, the association started a Vocational Training Center (VTC) where they offer basic stitching and tailoring courses at a lower cost for housewives, drop outs, unemployed and anyone willing to learn. Both the Montessori and the VTC are looked after by the ‘Tsüki Committee’ set up under YWCA Mokokchung.
The association also focuses on environmental issues and contributes enormously in ‘waste-segregation’ by collaborating with all environmentally conscious NGOs and Mokokchung Municipal Council. Events such as ‘Plastic-Free July’ and ‘Santa’s workshop’ are organized every year by the association where they hold trainings or make Christmas ornaments by upcycling waste materials.
The Association even helps people spiritually, economically and in health through various prayer programs such as International Candle Light Services in every second week of May and provides counseling to HIV patients.
The Association is also an Implementing Supporting Agent for governmental schemes like the Jaal Jeevan Mission.
