Nagaland received no scholarships under the ‘Scholarships to Young Artists in Different Cultural Fields (SYA)’ scheme, according to an information provided by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today. This scheme supports young artists specializing in various cultural fields, such as classical dance forms, indigenous artwork, and other traditional art forms, for advanced training.

The SYA scheme provides scholarships of Rs. 5,000 per month to a maximum of 400 scholars for two years, distributed in four equal six-monthly installments. Eligible scholars must be between 18 and 25 years old and have been undergoing training under a Guru or institution for at least five years. Selection is based on performance in a personal interview with an Expert Committee constituted by the Ministry.

In addition to the SYA, the Ministry of Culture administers the ‘Scheme of Scholarship and Fellowship for Promotion of Art and Culture,’ which includes the SYA as a component. Funds for this scheme are not allocated separately by state or component. Over the last five years, the total funds allocated to the scheme were Rs. 12.30 crores in 2019-20, Rs. 15.83 crores in 2020-21, Rs. 21.25 crores in 2021-22, Rs. 23.68 crores in 2022-23, and Rs. 16.22 crores in 2023-24.
