It may be recalled that the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda launched the ‘Kayakalp Award Scheme’ on May 15, 2015 as an extension of the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ in an initiative to improve and promote the cleanliness, hygiene, waste management and infection control practices in public health care facilities and to incentivize the exemplary performing facilities.

According to the National Health Systems Resource Centre’s website, the objectives of the award scheme is to inculcate a culture of ongoing assessment and peer review of performance related to hygiene, sanitation and infection control, secondly to incentivize and recognize public healthcare facilities that show exemplary performance in adhering to standard protocols of cleanliness, infection control and sanitation and to create and share sustainable practices related to improving cleanliness in public health facilities which lead to positive health outcomes.

Initiated from District hospitals in 2015, the scheme expanded to PHC level (2016) and then covered all Urban Health Facilities by 2017.
According to Dr. Aren, the District Quality Manager, the number of facilities under Mokokchung district chosen for the award stands at 13, which is the highest in the state.

She said that with the introduction of the ‘Kayakalp Award Scheme,’ there have been notable changes throughout the district.
Dr. Aren further noted that all of the healthcare facilities that were chosen for the honor would get cash awards during an award ceremony that will be conducted at a later, as of yet undetermined, date.

She went on to say that receiving the prize will inspire other healthcare facilities in the district to perform better.
The result of Kayakalp Award 2021-22 was declared by the State Level Award Committee through the Mission Director, NHM on July 11.
