The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) has announced the 17th Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship, scheduled to be held on December 6, 2024, at Chiechama. A highlight of the Hornbill Festival, the championship will showcase traditional Naga wrestling with participation from eight Naga tribes: Angami, Chakhesang, Zeliang, Lotha, Sumi, Pochury, Rengma, and Ao.
This year’s event will feature four categories: 75kg & below, 90kg & below, the Hornbill Championship for Men, and a Women’s Exhibition Match. A total of 45 male and 14 female wrestlers are expected to compete. Additionally, the champion of the 1st ANCSU Wrestling Meet 2024 has been awarded a wildcard entry.
Prominent names, including reigning Nagaland Wrestling Champion Kezhaseluo-o Pienyü and former champion Venuzo Dawhuo, will compete alongside other seasoned and rising Naga wrestlers for the coveted Hornbill International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024.
Participants, referees, and officials are required to report at IG Stadium, Kohima, on December 5 at 10:00 AM for the official briefing, weight measurements, and draw of fixtures.
The NWA also extended invitations to locals and tourists interested in competing. Those outside the eight participating tribes can register on or before December 4, 2024, by contacting 8787538827 or 7005104434.
With its blend of tradition and competition, the championship promises to be a major attraction at the Hornbill Festival, celebrating Naga culture and sportsmanship.
