The 5th Inter-School Badminton Championship 2024 commenced at the Indoor Badminton Stadium in Mokokchung on Wednesday and will continue until 27 April. The event is organized by the Mokokchung District Badminton Association (MDBA).

Marto shi Jamir, President of MDBA, highlighted in his welcome address that this year’s tournament has set a new record. It features participation from 14 schools with a total of 156 participants set to compete in over 230 matches across 20 categories.

Jamir expressed his appreciation for the support extended by principals and teachers from various schools, allowing students to engage in sports while maintaining a balance with their academic pursuits. He urged schools to continue supporting their students’ participation in both sports and MDBA activities. Additionally, he announced that summer coaching sessions, followed by the Mokokchung District Badminton Tournament and a winter camp, will be organized.

Loko Peter, Assistant General Manager of SBI, Regional Business Office Mokokchung, graced the event as special guest. In his address, Peter emphasized the crucial role sports play in personal development and character building. He highlighted values such as discipline, respect for others, friendship, and leadership that sports instill in individuals. Peter urged people to remain mentally and physically active, emphasizing the importance of overcoming challenges and adversities.

He encouraged the Nagas to pursue careers in sports, citing their natural physical agility and talent. Peter noted that badminton is particularly suited to the skills of the Nagas.

The inaugural program concluded with an oath-taking ceremony and briefing conducted by the technical committee.
