In a significant development in the run up to the ensuing Nagaland assembly elections in Mokokchung district, the Civil Society Organization (CSO) Mangkolemba has demanded an unconditional apology from the NDPP Mokokchung Region for “distorting facts and tarnishing the image of the organization and the people of Mangkolemba.”
In a rejoinder to what it called “allegations labeled against certain Mangkolemba based civil organizations” by the NDPP Mokokchung Region, the CSO Mangkolemba rebutted the former’s “multiple unsubstantiated allegations against ‘certain Mangkolemba based civil organizations’.” CSO Mangkolemba claimed that the NDPP Mokokchung Region’s letter to the DC & DEO Mokokchung has tarnished the image of the CSOs/NGOs of Mangkolemba in particular and the people of Mangkolemba in general.
The NDPP Mokokchung Region had earlier on February 17 written to the DC & DEO Mokokchung with the request to “restrict exercise of unauthorized power by civil organizations during election in Mangkolemba town.”
The NDPP Mokokchung Region had also written that “certain Mangkolemba town based civil organizations issue and enforce arbitrary orders banning entry into and movement of non-residents in Mangkolemba town during an election period.”
It was further stated by the NDPP Mokokchung Region that they have reports of “local thugs” going around Mangkolemba town issuing verbal warnings to select residents. “The same practices were reported even during last elections and there are accounts of residents being allegedly manhandled and harmed and their properties being destroyed,” it added.
The party had also requested the DC & DEO to issue “strict orders to all concerned to ensure that such malpractices are not repeated during the ensuing election and set an exemplary precedent in curbing elements detrimental to ensuring a free and fair election without any paranoia.”
Meanwhile, the CSO Mangkolemba on Wednesday appealed to all right-thinking citizens to condemn such unfounded allegations. Further, the CSO Mangkolemba demanded an unconditional apology from the NDPP Mokokchung Region. “Otherwise, the organization will take its own course of action as deemed fit. In the event of any untoward incidents arising out of these allegations, the NDPP shall be held solely responsible,” it maintained.
The CSO Mangkolemba rejoinder was addressed to the president, NDPP Mokokchung Region and a copy endorsed to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mangkolemba.
