Kohima, 30 April (MTNews): What began as a group of 10 to 15 amateur footballers arriving at Science College Ground, Jotsoma early one morning in the summer of 2011 to play a match has today held its season launch, team announcement, and jersey launch with Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA as the special guest.
Until recently, most matches were played between 10 participants, with 5 men in each team, and a modest goal post made of stones and bricks. This group of players then decided to form a club in order to compete against other clubs in friendly matches.
However, during one of their friendly matches with Amur Falcon Football Club (AFFC) in 2015, Loben Jamir and Lipok Lemur of MFC proposed starting a football league with AFFC if the other players agreed. The notion was forthcoming, and thus the Morning Premier League (MPL) was born.
Morning Premier League is a one-of-a-kind competition in which matches are exclusively played in the morning from 5:30 to 7:30. The goal of this league is to foster health awareness, camaraderie, and a competitive mindset, as well as to encourage sportsmanship in a safe, healthy, and enjoyable atmosphere.
The Directorate of School Education Football Club (DoSEFC) won the first season of MPL in 2015. The league began in August 2015 and concluded in October. The Lobenkokba Memorial Morning Champions Cup (named after co-founder, Late Lobenkokba Jamir) is another tournament held by MFA in the latter half of the year.
With no sponsors, the MPL is exclusively funded by registration fees and monthly payments from the League’s teams. It is managed by voluntary work and contributions from individual players in the absence of manpower. Each game is played and managed as professionally as possible, in accordance with norms of international leagues, with qualified referees and statisticians. Each player’s profile is managed and kept up to date.
In his remarks at the program’s inauguration, Rhutso stated that he was encouraged to learn about the league and that it was a player-funded league to retain health and friendships. He stated that friendship boosts one’s knowledge and confidence, and that the money spent on participating in the tournament and keeping one’s health would be far more helpful than going to the hospital for treatment.
He also encouraged the players to set an example for the youngsters through their conduct and habits. He also suggested similar leagues be introduced in other districts as well. While stating that the teams would have many leaders, he encouraged the players to use their influence to bring out good leaders in all the districts to witness a prosperous State.
Though the MPL is mostly overseen and managed by the MFA, it is the dedication and hard work of all the players that is now bearing fruit. As MPL gradually makes people stop and turn their heads, the organizers are inviting clubs to come and have a taste of league football with the goal of making MPL the Nagaland league, as envisioned by the founders.
The Morning Premier League 2023 edition starts on 1May at 6:40 am at Indira Gandhi Stadium Kohima with 10 Clubs vying for the title where two bottom clubs will be relegated at the end of the season.
