The expression “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” is an idiom that essentially means if you make your complaints or concerns heard loudly and persistently, you are more likely to receive attention, assistance, or resolution to your problem. In other words, when you speak up and advocate for yourself or your needs, you are more likely to get the help or support you are seeking. Some say that it is the modern version of the idiom, “The crying baby gets the milk.” In Nagaland, experience tells us that it is always the “squeaky wheels” that get the attention. In Mokokchung, however, it seems to appear that everything is perfectly fine or, perhaps, nothing is “squeaky.”
Sometimes, we need to raise our voices to grab the attention of the authorities, like the youth organizations of three wards did last year to get the hospital road repaired. When you raise your concerns vocally or persistently, especially in Nagaland, it tends to almost always catch the attention of the government. Surely, a “squeaky wheel” is hard to ignore. To argue that Mokokchung is being deprived of its due share of development is subjective and we must remember that the government of Nagaland has very limited resources. By making our problem known, we signal that our issue is a priority that needs to be addressed promptly. Once again, a “squeaky wheel” is hard to ignore.
Our problems may not be resolved immediately, but by being persistent and continuing to advocate for our needs, we can wear down “resistance” or bureaucratic obstacles and grab the attention of the decision makers. When we speak up and demand action, it also creates a level of accountability in governance. People in the government are more likely to take responsibility for resolving an issue when it is brought to their attention. In Nagaland, the government does not grease the wheel until it gets squeaky. We are encouraged to be squeaky and so we must.
The “squeaky wheel” approach has been instrumental in driving social and political change elsewhere too. Activists and advocates often use this strategy to raise awareness about injustices or problems that need addressing. The goal of being the “squeaky wheel” is to bring about a resolution to an issue or to effect change. By consistently and assertively expressing our concerns, we increase the likelihood of our problem finding a solution.
However, it’s important to note that while being persistent and vocal can be effective, it should be done respectfully and within the bounds of appropriate communication. Being overly aggressive or confrontational may not yield the desired results and can even be counterproductive. Additionally, some situations may require patience and a diplomatic approach rather than a confrontational one. Nonetheless, it is true that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Almost always.
