Mokokchung, 11 October (MTNews): The Chang Wedoshi Setshang (Chang Students’ Conference) has resolved to launch the first phase of their agitation by shutting down the Sao Chang College, Tuensang from 12 October 2023 after the authorities failed to meet their charter of demands.

The CWS had earlier on 8 September submitted a memorandum to the Department of Higher Education, Government of Nagaland, followed by a subsequent ultimatum on 26 September.

The CWS in a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Tuensang today, informing their decision to shut down the college, stated that the Department invited the Conference for a consultative meeting today and had a thorough deliberation on the charter of demands made by the CWS in its memorandum. “However, the Department has failed to give any assurance or to solicit our views regarding the concerned matter,” the CWS said. The CWS also mentioned that their agitation would persist until their demands were met.

It may be recalled that the Sao Chang College Students’ Union (SCCSU) had on 31 August started a protest which was called off on 2 September following a joint meeting between representatives of the Students’ Union, the college authority, and the district administration.

The students had been steadfastly advocating for three primary demands: the replacement of dilapidated buses, the repair of a critical 7.5-kilometer road stretch connecting Tuensang town to the college campus, and the appointment of a principal.
