Herato Sukhalu, Chairperson of the Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC), has announced a series of significant initiatives aimed at eradicating the syndicate system and enhancing local economic conditions. In a recent address, Sukhalu highlighted that the council’s efforts have successfully reduced egg prices from Rs. 230-240 to Rs. 210, marking a crucial first step toward controlling market rates.

Emphasizing the need for systemic change to benefit the public, Sukhalu pledged that the ZTC would address other syndicate systems in the town. “To bring change, we must change the system,” he stated, underscoring the council’s commitment to ensuring fair pricing for consumers.

In a bid to support local businesses, the council plans to encourage educated unemployed youth to engage in entrepreneurship. Sukhalu stressed that success in business takes time and perseverance, stating, “We want to give youth a chance in business, as there are limited options available.”

According to an update received here, the council is also collaborating with the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) to improve waste management and enhance cleanliness in the town. However, challenges remain, including a shortage of vehicles for waste collection. Currently, only two vehicles are operational, with repairs underway for two others.

Addressing concerns from taxi drivers regarding fare concessions for students, Sukhalu proposed a reduced fee from Rs. 30 to Rs. 20. He urged relevant departments to improve road conditions, particularly near the North Point Colony, which is crucial for students attending the Government College and accessing the Deputy Commissioner’s office, currently under construction.

On the issue of single-use plastics, he clarified that the temporary relaxation until October 31 permits vendors to sell existing stock but emphasized that no new stock should enter the town after this date. He reiterated the need for strict monitoring following the relaxation period.

Sukhalu also condemned the irresponsible ownership of domestic animals that contribute to littering and announced the formation of a committee to address this issue.

In an effort to raise revenue, the ZTC plans to implement parking taxes in the coming months, with proposed rates of Rs. 10 for two-wheelers, Rs. 20 for light vehicles, and Rs. 50-100 for heavy vehicles, which will need to park outside the town area.

As the Christmas festival approaches, Sukhalu announced plans to decorate the town by November 15, aiming to foster community engagement and celebrate the holiday spirit.

“The ZTC remains committed to tackling local challenges and creating a more sustainable and economically viable Zunheboto for all its residents,” an update from Tokavi Zhimomi stated.
