The Indian National Congress President has approved the appointment of C Apok Jamir as the Working President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), effective immediately. This announcement was made by AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal.

The news has reportedly come as a surprise to many Congress party workers, with some expressing that they are “shocked” and that this is “not the happiest” development, considering Jamir has “not been too long” with the party. One party member noted, “We were hoping for someone with a longer history in the Congress to lead us.”

C Apok Jamir is the son of veteran Congressman and former Chief Minister of Nagaland, SC Jamir. Apok Jamir served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004, representing Nagaland as a member of the Indian National Congress. He also won elections for the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 2008 and 2013, representing the Mokokchung Town assembly constituency. However, as the Congress party’s influence has declined in the state, Jamir shifted his allegiance to the Naga People’s Front (NPF), officially joining the party in 2015.

The implications of this leadership change remain to be seen, as the NPCC faces challenges in regaining its foothold in Nagaland state politics.
