Catholic institutions across Nagaland hold condolence services for Late Pope Francis

Catholic institutions across the Diocese of Kohima came together on April 23 to honour the life and spiritual legacy of the late Pope Francis, following a directive issued by the Bishop of Kohima. The Diocese observed the day with solemn condolence services and prayer processions, uniting thousands in mourning and reflection.

At St. Xavier Parish, Jalukie, a condolence service and prayer procession began at 8:30 AM and drew over 1,500 participants, including members of the St. Xavier Catholic community, faculty and students of St. Xavier Higher Secondary School, and St. Xavier College, Jalukie.

The service was held at Jalukie Town Traffic Point and was graced by the presence of the Parish Priest, clergy, religious sisters, community elders, and educators. Rev. Fr. Dr. Francis, Principal of St. Xavier College, delivered the introductory address, recalling “the life, ministry, and global impact of Pope Francis.” Sir Gabriel followed with a short biography of the late Holy Father, while Fr. Albert Renao led prayers invoking God’s blessings for the repose of his soul.

Following the service, a prayer procession began from Jalukie Town Traffic Point and moved along Fr. Mani Road towards St. Xavier Parish Church. Participants carried banners bearing images of the late Pope, walking in reverent silence. The procession concluded with a candlelight prayer service at the parish church.

At the diocesan level, the Bishop of Kohima is set to preside over three Requiem Eucharistic Celebrations in memory of Pope Francis: at Mary Help of Christians Cathedral in Kohima, St. Joseph Parish in Chümoukedima, and Holy Cross Parish in Dimapur.

Throughout the Diocese, the Catholic faithful continue to “offer prayers and remember the profound legacy of Pope Francis, a beloved shepherd and servant of peace,” an update received here said.
