S Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), conducted a field inspection on June 7 of the ongoing Kohima Bypass Project (PKG-1) and the collapsed section of National Highway-2 (NH-2) near the Kisama exit gate.

During his visit to the Kohima Bypass site, Jamir highlighted the critical need for “collaborative efforts among all stakeholders—landowners, government officials, and executing agencies.” He stressed the importance of “mutual understanding to ensure uninterrupted progress,” adding that “while judicial processes will take their course, project work must not be stalled.”

The Executive Director (Projects) of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) briefed the MP about the tunnel construction delays, noting that the work had been “halted for fourteen (14) months due to landowner objections.” This delay, the official explained, led to “structural collapse and deformation” of the tunnel section. An estimated additional “one and a half (1.5) years” will be required for full restoration.

Jamir later inspected the collapsed site on NH-2 near the Kisama exit gate, where he expressed “serious concern over the situation” and urged the authorities to take “swift and effective action.”

NHIDCL officials present informed him those proposals for restoration had already been submitted and that repair work was expected to be completed within “ten (10) days.” They also mentioned that the Government of Manipur was exerting pressure for early completion.

Assuring his support, Jamir said he would “meet with the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima at the earliest to help expedite the process.” He further proposed that “landowner identification could be streamlined through the active engagement of the respective villages” to avoid further delays.
