Mmhonlumo Kikon, national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, resigned from the primary and active membership of the party on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Kikon, who was the only national spokesperson of the BJP from the Northeast region, confirmed his resignation through a letter addressed to BJP national president JP Nadda.
“…I believe the time has come for me to take a step back and recalibrate my journey. My decision is guided by the need to explore new avenues of public engagement and policy work, which I believe will allow me to continue contributing to society in different ways.”
He also reflected on his decade-long association with the BJP, stating, “Since joining the BJP more than a decade ago, I have had the honour of serving the Party and contributing to its growth and activities in various capacities and responsibilities entrusted to me. My association with the Party has been a deeply enriching experience, having served as prabhari of Mizoram State and also as National Spokesperson.”
Kikon, who previously served as the party’s incharge (prabhari) for Mizoram, had been a key figure in the BJP’s outreach efforts in Christian-majority states of the Northeast.
While the resignation letter did not cite political differences, a party source indicated that Kikon’s decision may have been influenced by a “lack of space for constructive opinion” within the party and “alleged mistreatment of minority Christian groups in the Northeastm,” according to The Hindu.
As of the time of filing this report, the BJP has not issued an official statement in response to Kikon’s departure.
