In response to the assault on its forces at Khamtaing Village, Pangsau, on January 9, 2026, the NSCN-K (Ang Mai led) has launched a counterattack against the NSCN-K(YA).
The Mobile-6 unit, stationed in the Khamti area, carried out an early morning assault at 6:00 a.m. Myanmar time today on an NSCN-K(YA) camp located at the 18th Mile between Taka and Nampha.
The NSCN-K (Ang Mai led) reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on the NSCN-K(YA) cadres and successfully overran their jungle camp, according to a statement from the group. It added, “Due to communication gap we couldn’t get further updates. Waiting for further detail information.”

This attack follows an earlier incident in which NSCN-K (Ang Mai led) expressed grief and outrage over the killing of two of its cadres in what it described as an unprovoked gunfight and mortar attack by NSCN-K(YA). The victims, Lieutenant Avi from the Pochury Region and Sergeant Peyao Konyak from the Konyak Region, were killed within the “sacred premises” of the Khammataing Village Church compound, the group claimed in a statement on its official social media platform.
Tensions between the factions remain high as both sides continue to engage in violent confrontations in the border regions of Myanmar. Further updates on the situation are awaited.
Meanwhile, according to news outlet Myanmar CNI, the two NSCN factions are competing to control the Pangsau region along the India-Myanmar border. The Pangsau Pass in the Naga Hills of Sagaing Region, Myanmar is known for the historic Stilwell Road, built during the World War II by Allied forces connecting Ledo in Assam, India through Myanmar to Kunming, China.

Myanmar CNI had earlier in January 6 reported that the NSCN-K (Ang Mai led) “has taken up troop positions in order to gain control of Pansaung town (area), located in Nanyun Township of the Naga Self-Administered Zone, Sagaing Region, which serves as a border trade exit point between Myanmar and India.”
