Nagaland celebrated the 16th National Voters’ Day today under the theme “My India, My Vote,” reaffirming the importance of active citizen participation in democracy.

At the state-level program held at Hotel Japfu, Kohima, Abhijit Sinha, IAS, Principal Secretary, Home Department, urged eligible citizens, especially first-time voters, to exercise their right without fear or pressure. “Democracy cannot function properly if decisions are taken by a few and imposed on others. Inclusive discussion and respect for different opinions are essential,” he said while administering the National Voters’ Day Pledge to attendees.

The event also honored the dedication of election staff. Sentitula, Primary Teacher and BLO of PS No. 5, Alongmen Ward, received the State Award for Best Booth Level Officer, while H. Longching of Yingli Government College, Longleng, was recognized as Best Campus Ambassador for promoting voter awareness. Twelve first-time voters were felicitated, representing the vital role of youth in shaping the future of democracy.

Similar celebrations were held across the state. In Mokokchung, ADC Atsungba Walling highlighted the district’s commitment to free and fair elections, encouraging young voters to register and vote responsibly. Tuensang, Tseminyu, and Mon also held programs with the recognition of new voters and awards for outstanding BLOs, reinforcing the message that every vote counts.

The day featured special addresses, musical performances, and messages from Chief Electoral Officer Bhagyashree Banayat, IAS, and Chief Election Commissioner of India Gyanesh Kumar, emphasizing that informed participation strengthens democracy.

From Kohima to Mon, Nagaland’s youth pledged to uphold democratic values, marking the 16th National Voters’ Day with a clear message: every vote matters, every voice counts.
