The Minister, who visited ICAR-KVK Longleng, assessed ongoing programs aimed at strengthening livelihood security for farmers and modernising traditional farming practices in the hill district.

During his inspection of development projects in the district headquarters, Thakur was not satisfied with the progress of the District Hospital works and stressed the need for timely execution of public infrastructure projects.
Officials were urged to ensure that development initiatives meet expected standards and deadlines.

At ICAR-KVK, the Minister interacted with scientists, extension personnel and farmers, emphasising the need to gradually transition from traditional jhum cultivation to scientifically validated, climate-resilient and resource-efficient farming systems. He underscored that modernisation efforts must remain sensitive to indigenous knowledge and local agro-ecological conditions.

Reviewing demonstrations on low-input responsive crop varieties suitable for hill agriculture, Thakur highlighted the importance of stable yields under rainfed and marginal conditions. He also appreciated initiatives promoting water harvesting structures such as jal kund and small-scale rainwater storage systems to address moisture stress and erratic rainfall in the district.

The Minister stressed that agricultural technologies must be location-specific and farmer-centric, calling for stronger convergence between research institutions, extension services and line departments to accelerate adoption of proven practices.

Special focus was laid on value addition, post-harvest management and entrepreneurship development, particularly among women farmers, to enhance income generation and create sustainable self-employment opportunities. Conservation of local germplasm and protection of farmers’ rights were also identified as strategic priorities.

Thakur reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to inclusive agricultural growth in remote and tribal regions, stating that scientific support and effective implementation of schemes are key to long-term rural development.

The Minister was accompanied by MLA Longleng A Pongshi Phom, Deputy Commissioner W Manpai Phom, NCS, and senior officials from various departments and civil society organisations.
