The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, organised a one-day workshop on single-use plastic and a cleanliness drive on March 25, 2026, at the college auditorium.

The programme was conducted under the Swachhata Action Plan and sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Around 200 NSS student volunteers participated in the event.

Imkongkumzuk, an NSS volunteer, chaired the session, while L.S. Vinod Kumar, Vice Principal of the college, delivered the welcome address. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. L. Imlinichet Imchen, Programme Officer, NSS.

The technical session featured two segments. In the first, L.H. Thangi Mannen, Retired Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Nagaland and Convenor of Earth Alliance Nagaland, spoke on “From Pollution to Solution: Rethinking Plastic use”. She highlighted the rising problem of waste generation and stressed that landfills are not a sustainable solution. She emphasised collective responsibility in waste management through awareness, reduced consumption, segregation, and proper disposal, along with the establishment of Material Recovery Facilities.

She also highlighted the upcoming Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which will come into effect from April 1, introducing mandatory four-stream waste segregation and stricter enforcement.

In the second session, Dr. Temjensangla Pongener spoke on “Single use plastic: Bridging awareness and action”, stressing conscious consumption and sustainable practices based on the principles of reducing, reusing, recycling and composting.
