Daochier I Imchen of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the 28 Koridang (ST) Assembly Constituency by-election in Mokokchung district, securing a margin of 3,123 votes.

According to the official Return of Election, Imchen secured 7,317 votes, defeating his closest rival, Independent candidate Toshikaba, who polled 4,194 votes. Other candidates included Imtiwapang with 3,633 votes and I Abenjang with 3,219 votes. Imchatoba Imchen and T Chalukumba Ao received 147 and 144 votes respectively.
A total of 22,506 electors were registered in the constituency, of which 18,654 valid votes were polled. The election recorded 48 NOTA votes and 43 rejected votes, taking the total votes cast to 18,745.
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L Imchen in November last year. Polling was held on April 9, with a turnout of 82.21%.
With this victory, Daochier I Imchen has been elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He received the Certificate of Election from Returning Officer Nockpai Konyak, SDO(C), at the Mokokchung DC office on May 4.
NPF, Dy CM Patton, Minister Along congratulate Daochier Imchen
Leaders of the ruling alliance, including the Naga People’s Front (NPF), Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, and Minister Temjen Imna Along, have congratulated PDA consensus candidate Daochier I Imchen on his “thumping victory” in the 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency by-election.
In a statement, the NPF described Imchen’s win as a “decisive mandate” reflecting the people’s trust in his leadership, the PDA’s development vision, and the electorate’s commitment to peace and progress in the region.
“This decisive mandate reflects the people’s trust in his leadership, the PDA’s vision for development, and the collective commitment to peace and progress in the region,” the party said, adding that his victory was a result of grassroots connect and the faith reposed by voters of Koridang.
The party also extended its best wishes to the newly elected MLA and assured cooperation in matters of public interest and development.
Minister Temjen Imna Along also congratulated Imchen, stating that the people of Koridang have “elected a strong leader” and that the mandate reflects continuity in governance and a shared vision for development.
“The mandate reflects public confidence in our shared vision. We remain committed to advancing development and progress, and are grateful for the support,” he said, while also thanking voters for their support to the PDA coalition and party workers for their efforts.
Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton also expressed gratitude to the electorate for placing their trust in the PDA consensus candidate, stating that the result reflects unity and a shared vision for the future.
He acknowledged the efforts of party workers on the ground and thanked the leadership of the State BJP and alliance partners for their support during the election process.
Patton also extended appreciation to Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio and alliance partners for maintaining a spirit of consensus and cooperation, saying it strengthened the collective resolve to serve the people.
He further congratulated Daochier Imchen and expressed confidence that he would work with dedication and sincerity for the people of Koridang and strive to fulfil their aspirations.

Koridang bypoll vote counting completed, results declared: CEO Nagaland
The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Nagaland, has informed that counting of votes for the bye-election to the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency was successfully completed on May 4, 2026, at a single counting centre, following which the results were officially declared by the Returning Officer.
According to the CEO office, the counting process was conducted in the presence of contesting candidates, their election agents, and counting agents. A total of 51 counting agents witnessed the process.
After completion of counting, VVPAT slips were taken out from the VVPAT machines in the presence of candidates and their representatives under CCTV surveillance and security arrangements. The slips were then placed in sealed black envelopes and stored in the strong room along with statutory documents.
The office further stated that EVMs were also sealed in the presence of candidates and their representatives before being transferred to the strong room.
As per Election Commission of India protocols, the EVMs will remain stored in the strong room until the finalisation of the list of election petitions by the concerned High Court. In case any election petition is filed, the machines will remain in secure storage until final disposal of the petition.
The CEO office maintained that all procedures were carried out in accordance with prescribed guidelines ensuring transparency and security throughout the counting process.
