The Naga National Council (NNC) has condemned the killing of six Naga hostages in Manipur while expressing appreciation for the release of 14 Kuki hostages by Nagas, saying the latter reflected the organisation’s policy of non-violence.
The resolutions were adopted during an emergency meeting of the NNC Central Executive Council held at its headquarters in Kohima on June 25. The meeting was chaired by Kulhumo Rhakho, while the invocation prayer was led by Neilalie Mepruo.
In one of its resolutions, the NNC said it appreciated the release of the 14 Kuki hostages without harm, although it clarified that the organisation had no direct involvement in securing their release. At the same time, it strongly condemned the killing of six Naga hostages.
The organisation also made remarks on the status of the Kuki community and cautioned against what it described as attempts to suppress indigenous inhabitants. These views were expressed in the resolution adopted by the meeting.
The meeting also unanimously elected Zapu-o Zhasa as Vice President (Headquarters), a newly created position intended to assist the President at the Kohima headquarters.
According to the NNC, the post was created in view of increasing organisational activities and the need to respond to fast-moving political developments in the Naga homeland. The organisation said the new vice president would assume office immediately after taking the oath of office administered by the competent authority.
The Central Executive Council further cautioned its members to remain alert in the event of what it described as increased hostile activities by its adversaries.
The resolutions were issued by the Secretary of the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN).
