Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers JP Nadda visited Mon district on Wednesday to assess the extensive damage caused by recent landslides and flash floods, assuring the affected people of all possible support from the Government of India for relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts.
During his visit, Nadda inspected the disaster-hit areas to assess the extent of the destruction before holding a meeting with the district administration and Konyak civil society organisations at the Konyak Union Office in Mon. He also met family members of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
According to a press statement issued by the Konyak Union, the organisation presented photographs and videos documenting the scale of devastation across Mon district, while the district administration submitted a comprehensive report detailing the loss of lives, destruction of property, damage to public infrastructure and the overall impact of the landslides and flash floods in Mon district as well as the situation across Nagaland.
The Deputy Commissioner of Mon informed the gathering that state ministers were unable to accompany the Union Minister as continuous rainfall in Kohima prevented their helicopter from taking off due to adverse weather and operational constraints.
Welcoming the Union Minister, Konyak Union president K Yamao Konyak expressed appreciation for his visit during what he described as a time of grief and sorrow for the district.
Addressing the gathering, Nadda conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the disaster. He said the Government of India would extend all possible support and assistance for relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts in the district.
The Union Minister also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had entrusted him with visiting Mon district to assess the situation firsthand and convey the Prime Minister’s heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the people affected by the unprecedented tragedy.
Nadda was accompanied by Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak and Assam Minister for Health & Family Welfare Ashok Singhal.
In its statement, the Konyak Union expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for what it described as his compassionate visit and appreciated the concern shown by the Government of India. The Konyak Union said it remained hopeful that the assurances made during the visit would translate into timely relief, effective rehabilitation and long-term measures to restore the lives, livelihoods and infrastructure of the people affected by the unprecedented natural calamity in Mon district.
