The Mokokchung College of Teacher Education (MCTE), Yimyu, inaugurated its new academic building on Friday, with Minister for Higher Education and Tourism Temjen Imna Along announcing a 40-bed girls’ hostel for the institution under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA).
The academic building was constructed under a project sanctioned at Rs 4.80 crore. According to the technical report presented by Executive Engineer, PWD (Housing), Er. Vikhepu Yeptho, the work order was issued on February 24, 2021, construction commenced on March 5, 2021, and the project was completed on July 31, 2026.
Addressing the gathering, Along described the new building as a significant achievement for MCTE and stressed the need for educational institutions to ensure that infrastructure is effectively utilised. He also announced that the proposed 40-bed girls’ hostel would further expand residential facilities at the college.
The inauguration also marked a significant phase in MCTE’s development, following challenges faced by the institution in the past. Joint Director of Planning, Budget & Accounts, Directorate of Higher Education, Dr. Hukato Swu, said MCTE had been on the verge of de-recognition in 2019.
He credited the support of government officials and the leadership of Principal Dr. T. Alemla Longkumer with helping the institution overcome the difficulties and reach its present position.
According to Dr. Alemla, MCTE began in 2012 at the DIET campus, while three acres of land were acquired in 2013. An additional two acres were acquired by 2019, enabling the college to meet the land requirement prescribed by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
The Principal also acknowledged the support of the Khensa Village Council and Yimyu Ward Council, as well as Along, in the development of the institution. She said MCTE caters to student teachers from Nagaland as well as other states.
The program was attended by government officials, representatives from neighbouring villages, officials of the Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM), faculty members, staff, student teachers and invited guests.
