The 3rd Quarterly National Lok Adalat held across Nagaland on Saturday took up 444 cases and disposed of 387, recording an overall disposal rate of about 87 per cent and settling disputes involving Rs 5,25,66,901.20.
The Lok Adalat was conducted through 11 benches at district headquarters under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA). The cases included pre-litigation matters such as bank and loan recoveries and telephone bills, along with pending criminal compoundable offences, Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) cases and other civil matters.
Of the cases disposed, 318 were at the pre-litigation stage and 69 were pending cases.
Dimapur recorded the highest number of disposals with 152 cases, comprising 123 bank recovery cases, three MACT cases, 25 BSNL cases and one pre-institution mediation and conciliation matter. The total settlement amounted to Rs 1,71,30,176.
In Kohima, 52 bank recovery cases, eight BSNL cases, one commercial suit and one Negotiable Instruments Act case were settled for Rs 1,93,72,236.
Peren took up 51 pre-litigation bank recovery cases and one electricity bill dispute, with 42 bank recovery cases settled for Rs 16,23,400.
Phek disposed of all 37 pre-litigation bank recovery cases taken up, involving a settlement amount of Rs 35,41,222.
Mon took up 19 pre-litigation and litigation bank recovery cases and disposed of 16, with settlements amounting to Rs 48,78,450. Kiphire disposed of 44 out of 47 pre-litigation bank recovery cases, settling Rs 14,49,792.
In Mokokchung, 11 pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up, with 10 disposed of for Rs 8,85,610.
Wokha settled four of five pre-litigation bank recovery cases and three of five pending criminal compoundable cases, with a total settlement of Rs 1,91,500.
Tuensang disposed of all five cases taken up, involving a settlement amount of Rs 8,61,913 against an outstanding amount of Rs 23,19,547. Zunheboto also disposed of all five pre-litigation bank recovery cases, settling Rs 20,63,645.
Longleng took up 10 cases and disposed of six, with a settlement amount of Rs 5,68,957.22.
The National Lok Adalat provides an alternative dispute resolution platform where eligible cases can be settled through conciliation, helping parties resolve disputes without prolonged litigation.
District Legal Services Authorities urged beneficiaries and litigants to make use of Lok Adalats to resolve eligible disputes through the legal services mechanism.
