The Mopungchuket Mongsen phratry celebrated the 50th anniversary of Etiben Memorial Tower at Mongsen Tenem, Mopungchucket today. The tower was built in 1972 which was inaugurated by Late Koramoa Jamir, then Nagaland PWD Minister on May 2. After almost 50 years, the Mopungchuket Mongsen Medemsanger Putu decided to rebuild a new tower which was inaugurated today by Mmhonlumo Kikon, National Spokesperson BJP and Advisor IT & C, Science & Technology, New & Renewable Energy, Nagaland, as the special guest.

The program was also attended by S. Phangnon Konyak, MP, Rajya Sabha, who was on her maiden visit to Mokokchung after being elected MP.

In his remarks, Mmhonlumo Kikon stated that the occasion was a culturally significant and historic event and that Mopungchuket is not just an ordinary Naga village, but a pioneering community that laid the groundwork for Mokokchung to become the Land of Pioneers.

He said that the forefathers from Mopungchuket were remarkable individuals who contributed significantly to the development of Naga society. He exhorted the people of Mopungchuket to be faithful to their forefathers’ efforts and to continue the tradition by rethinking and reclaiming their past greatness.

He also likened the saga of ‘Etiben and Jina’ to a Shakespearean love story, a narrative of love transcending animosity and hostility. “This monument is dedicated to their love story. This love story existed in Naga society and has since become a legend,” he observed.

S. Phangnon Konyak, who also addressed the crowd, stated that Mopungchuket village’s sustainable tourism project should be conveyed to the rest of Nagaland.

She also discussed the value of culture, and stated, “Culture gives us our identity, and we lose our identity without it.” Our identity gets more anchored when our culture is rooted, she noted.
“Our culture is becoming diluted in many ways. On the one side, we have our faith, and on the other, we have our culture. Our culture should go hand in hand with our faith so that we are spiritually and culturally rooted,” she said. Later in the evening, she switched on the ceremonial lighting of Etiben Memorial Tower.

The dedicatory prayer was performed by Rev. Dr. Mar Pongen, Executive Secretary, ABAM Impur. Limalenden Longkumer, Convenor, Mopungchuket Tourism Society, presented a brief comment about Etiben Memorial Tower and Tourism in Mopungchuket. Tarepkaba, the Convenor of the Construction Committee, offered the vote of gratitude on behalf of the committee.

Earlier, Mmholumo Kikon and Phangnon Konyak halted at Impur on their way to Mopungchuket where they visited ABAM Museum. They also visited Mangkolong tea garden.

Thanks for sharing your ideas.
