No society is flawless, and Naga society is no exception. Yet we have every reason and ability to aspire for excellence. To do so, however, requires courage to look inward, revisit long held social norms, and dismantle narratives that no longer serve our collective progress. Societies that stop questioning themselves risk stagnation. Growth demands discourse, self evaluation, and adaptation, especially in a world that is changing faster than ever before.

One of the most archaic norms that continues to hold us back is the limitation on personal liberty. In traditional Naga society, despite the democratic nature of our polity, the space for individual freedom of expression has always been limited. This may have worked in closely knit village settings where collectivism ensured survival, stability, and order. However, as society evolved, the same restrictive framework has followed us into settings where it no longer fits.

Even in urban environments, which are distinctly modern and not traditional institutions, individuals often do not enjoy the liberty to dissent or question collective decisions. While such conformity is sometimes justified in the interest of public harmony, it comes at the cost of personal freedom. We see this in the way individuals are summoned by community groups, associations, or councils for speaking out or expressing opinions that do not align with the collective. In many cases, people are pressured to issue public apologies, not for wrongdoing but simply for exercising democratic freedoms.

This is not a sign of a society confident in its own institutions. Rather, it reflects a fear of dialogue and disagreement. A mature society must possess the ability to engage opposing views without perceiving them as threats. Freedom of speech is not a danger when paired with accountability and reason. On the contrary, it strengthens institutions, encourages responsible citizenship, and protects against authoritarian tendencies.

Collectivism has value only when it safeguards, not suppresses, individual liberty. The challenge before us is to find a balance where community remains strong while personal freedoms are respected. If we fail to evolve, we risk sliding toward dysfunction. Only by respecting individual freedom can we build a society that is mature, confident, progressive, and capable of meeting the future without fear or insecurity. A society that protects the individual becomes stronger, not weaker, and that is the direction we must choose.
