Former Minister Kejong Chang passes away at 104

Former Minister and veteran leader Kejong Chang passed away in Dimapur early this morning at the age of 104. Known for his long and dedicated service to Nagaland, Chang’s death has led to many condolence messages from different organizations and leaders across the state.

Chang, who was from Tuensang district, worked as a government employee for many years before entering politics in 1998. He was elected unopposed from the 54th Tuensang Sadar-II assembly constituency and served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the 9th, 11th, 12th, and 13th Houses of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Throughout his career, he was admired for his hard work, humility, and commitment to public service.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed profound grief over Chang’s demise, describing him as not just a colleague but an elder brother figure.

In a condolence message, Rio highlighted Chang’s dedication to public service and his efforts in championing the cause of the underprivileged. “The emptiness created by his demise will be difficult to fill. It is my solemn prayer that his good legacy will continue and that he will be remembered for all the sacrifices and contributions he made toward the state’s welfare,” Rio stated.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) expressed deep sorrow over his death, highlighting his important role in Nagaland’s early years. “In his passing, not just the people of Tuensang district and the Chang tribe, but Nagaland has lost one of her pioneering leaders whose contributions will always be remembered,” the NDPP said. Despite his age, Chang continued to serve as the Treasurer of the 54th Tuensang Sadar-II NDPP assembly constituency.

The Naga People’s Front (NPF) also honored Chang, remembering his tireless efforts for the state’s progress. “His wisdom, leadership, and strong commitment to public service will always be remembered,” the NPF said in its message.

The Ex-Parliamentarians Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN) called Chang an inspiration and mentor. “Despite his advanced age, late Kejong was known to have fulfilled his responsibilities with grace and humility, always putting the welfare of the people and the state first,” Ex-PAN said.

S Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament and President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), expressed his condolences, saying, “His contributions to the party and society will always be remembered with respect and gratitude.”

Chang is survived by his family, including his son, Rev Dr Chingmak. Many have extended their condolences to the family, offering prayers for comfort and strength during this difficult time.
