MoU signed with UK to offer 5 Chevening Scholarships for Nagaland students

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio met with international officials to discuss trade, tourism, and cultural exchange in the lead-up to the 25th Annual Hornbill Festival on 30 November, 2024.

Deputy Chief of Mission Jorgan Andrews and Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz from the US Embassy in New Delhi visited Rio to discuss opportunities for collaboration in trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the US and Nagaland. They expressed thanks for the Chief Minister’s hospitality and highlighted the US partnership with the festival. The US will be a country partner for this year’s Hornbill Festival.

CM Rio also met with Japan’s Ambassador Ono Keiichii, Political Counsellor Aya Skumasu, and 1st Secretary Ryusuke Hagiwara. Japan is participating in the Hornbill Festival as a country partner. The country will engage in various sectors, including cultural performances, handicraft workshops, and bamboo product exhibitions, with the participation of Japanese experts and renowned musicians.

In addition, Rio welcomed Alison Barrett, Country Director for India at the British Council, and Dr Debanjan Chakrabati, Director for East & Northeast India.

Their visit marks another important step in strengthening educational and cultural ties between Nagaland and the United Kingdom. Rio warmly welcomed the British delegation, expressing hope for future collaborations in areas such as education, cultural exchange, and capacity-building initiatives.

CM Rio also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK in India to reserve five annual slots for students from Nagaland in the Chevening Scholarships & Fellowships program. This agreement ensures that selected students will receive fully funded one-year master’s degrees at any UK university.

Under the terms of the MoU, the Government of Nagaland will part-fund the reserved slots. Applications will follow the standard Chevening process, with candidates evaluated by a panel of experts, including representatives from the Government of Nagaland.
Aspiring candidates have been asked to contact the Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) for guidance on the application process, which will commence in mid-2025.

The Government of Nagaland, in collaboration with the British High Commission and the Welsh Government, also hosted a roundtable discussion at Hotel Vivor. Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman of IDAN, stressed the potential for agritech and the creative economy to drive economic growth and highlighted the importance of strategic collaborations with the United Kingdom and Wales to usher in a new era of sustainable development for the state.

Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, and Andrew Gwatkin, Director of International Relations and Trade for the Welsh Government, applauded Nagaland’s efforts to strengthen bilateral ties. They outlined potential areas of collaboration, including sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, skill development, and the creative industries.

Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor for Industries and Commerce, stressed on the need to nurture a robust startup ecosystem in Nagaland with the support of international partners. She highlighted the state’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses and entrepreneurs, particularly in sectors with high growth potential.

A separate roundtable was conducted in Dimapur, bringing together key stakeholders from Nagaland’s business community. The discussion focused on enhancing ease of doing business, exploring innovative financing mechanisms, and identifying sectors with high potential for investment, including agribusiness, the creative economy, tourism, and technology.
