DC orders action against hoarding, public urged to avoid panic buying

The Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung has issued an order directing all retail fuel outlets in the district to maintain minimum stock levels and ensure fair distribution of petrol and diesel, citing powers under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

The order, issued on May 15, stated that the directives were necessary “in the interest of public service” to ensure uninterrupted availability and equitable distribution of essential fuel supplies across the district.

According to the order, all fuel stations must maintain a minimum reserve stock of 2,000 litres of diesel and 1,500 litres of petrol at all times. The administration said the reserve stock is meant to meet emergency requirements and ensure stability in daily fuel supply.

It also warned against hoarding and diversion of fuel. “Strict action shall be initiated under relevant sections of The Prevention of Blackmarketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980, against any fuel station or individual found indulging in hoarding or illegal diversion of fuel stocks,” the order stated. It further directed that all available stock must be dispensed in a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory manner.

The order also makes it mandatory for fuel station managers to maintain updated stock registers and submit daily stock reports to the District Administration whenever required.

On public conduct, the administration advised residents not to engage in panic buying or unnecessary stockpiling of fuel. “Adequate fuel stock is available within the district supply chain,” it said, adding that the measures are precautionary to ensure smooth and regulated distribution.
