The Gorkha Public Panchayat Kohima (GPPK) today observed Balidan Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) in honor of the sacrifices made by martyrs Major Durga Malla and Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse at the community hall in Chandmari, Kohima.
Major Malla sacrificed his life for the cause of Indian independence on August 25, 1944, while Capt. Kenguruse, MVC (posthumous), laid down his life in the Kargil War on June 28, 1999.
Gracing the occasion as the special guest, Angami Public Organization (APO) president Thejao Vihienuo stated that the history of mankind is a history of the migration of people and communities, while the most important aspect is peaceful coexistence.
The APO president expressed happiness that the Gorkhas and the people of Kohima have been coexisting for so many years, appreciating the Tsütuonuomia (T Khel) Council for its accommodative spirit and the Gorkhas for being a part of Kohima town’s development.
Vihienuo maintained that the Gorkhas came to Kohima with bravery and loyalty as their two most prominent characteristics, and he hoped that the present generations continue to uphold these traits.
He also praised the two martyrs, noting that such occasions provide an opportunity to strengthen patriotism and enhance commitment to society and its people. He called upon everyone to be dedicated and committed to the greater cause of society.
Speaking as the guest of honor, Superintendent of Police Kohima Bharat Laxman Markad remarked that although the martyrs were from different places and communities, their sacrifices exemplified a shared goal and love for the nation. He hoped that the sacrifices made by the martyrs would help India prosper in all aspects.
He also urged the gathering to strive hard with dedication and commitment to build the country the martyrs dreamt of, as this would be a fitting tribute to their supreme sacrifice.
GPPK Advisor Ranjeet Lama shared a brief history of Maj Malla and Capt Kenguruse.
The parents of Capt Kenguruse, leaders of the Northern Angami Public Organization, T Khel Council, T Khel Youth Organization, T Khel Students Union, and KMC Council Ward No. 13 (Lower Chandmari), Asangla Jamir, and a galaxy of dignitaries attended the program.
The event, chaired by Gorkha Students’ Union Kohima vice president Jenny Lamechane, began with the lighting of the lamp and floral tributes to the martyrs. GPPK president Santu Thapa delivered the welcome address, while GPPK general secretary Suresh Kumar Lama extended the vote of thanks. A welcome song was presented by Vivela Club, and a special song by Priya Baraily captivated the gathering.
