The Buddha Purnima celebration was observed with reverence and devotion at the Multi-Utility Hall of Gorkha Public Panchayat, Chandmari, Kohima, on Monday, 12th May 2025. The event, organized by the Tamang Buddhist Association, Kohima, marked the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (final liberation) of Lord Buddha.
The Governor of Nagaland, La. Ganesan, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered the keynote address. In his speech, the Governor emphasized the enduring relevance of Lord Buddha’s teachings, stating, “Buddha Purnima is not merely a celebration; it is a thrice-blessed day—marking the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha. This convergence symbolizes the cyclical nature of existence and the possibility of transcendence through self-realization.”
The Governor reflected on the life of Prince Siddhartha, from his renunciation to his enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. He stressed the importance of self-awareness, compassion, and inner transformation, noting that the Buddha’s teachings, particularly the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, continue to offer a guide to creating a harmonious and inclusive world.
Quoting Buddha’s words, “I own nothing, and I am a nobody. That is why everything is mine,” the Governor highlighted the relevance of this message in today’s world, urging empathy and compassion over authority.
He also noted that “From the lantern-lit temples of Japan to the bustling streets of Bodh Gaya, Buddha Purnima unites millions in a shared aspiration for inner peace,” and encouraged everyone to carry forward Buddha’s light every day. “May we strive to be ‘no-thing,’ as he exemplified, dissolving barriers of ego to embrace the oneness of all life,” the Governor added.
